In colonial times...sugar was a very valuable commodity. It was imported from the Caribbean Islands for sale in America. It was hand-poured and formed into a hard cone, which was then wrapped in paper or cheesecloth.
The sugar cone was most often kept locked away with other valuable household goods, such as tea. Small bits of sugar would be snipped with scissors or scrapped from the cone. These cones would traditionally be displayed on the best pottery or pewter plates when bringing it to the table, as only the wealthiest could afford it!
Refrigerator Pickles
Lasts up to 1 year!
This is a quick & easy recipe ~ You can cut the recipe in half if you like! They are yummy!
6 c. thinly sliced cucumbers 1 c. thinly sliced onion 1 c. thinly sliced green pepper (can also add red pepper) 1 c. white vinegar 2 c. sugar 1 T. salt 1 t. celery seed Combine all ingredients. (I combine the cucumbers, onion and green pepper in a bowl and then combine the other ingredients and pour over the cucumber mixture). Place in jars and refrigerate~the pickles will be ready in 24 hrs. and will keep for one year. Great gift idea too! I found a huge, one gallon mason jar to store in ~ looks as pretty as it tastes! Great way to use up cucumbers from the garden! Enjoy!
